Advertising And Marketing

Advertising is an art as well as the business of making public a product, service or company so as to arouse a desire in the potential consumer to make a purchase. It is the paid promotion of goods services, ideas and companies by an identified sponsor. Advertising is an important aspect of marketing. Marketing involves the act or process of buying and selling in a market. This process further involves, according to the American Marketing Association, planning and executing the pricing, promotion, and distribution of goods and ideas and services to create exchanges that satisfy the individual and the organization. The marketing of goods, services and ideas is essential in order for a company to do well.

In earlier times manufacturers used to put their goods in the market place in expectations of the people buying them, now-a-days before manufacturing a product manufacturers scan the markets, design the product and perform its testing before introducing it to the market. Now days the process of buying and selling is performed in various ways. Installment buying and selling, ”home-shopping” through television channels and on-line transactions on the net are a few ways in which to shop. The work of third parties like employment agencies, booking agents and travel agents are high in the marketing of goods.

Advertising plays an important part in the marketing of goods. Advertisements now days are done through various channels like the media, hoardings and billboards and distribution of pamphlets. The first methods of advertisement involved “outdoor display”. These comprised of eye-catching signs painted on the wall of buildings. There also were town criers (who gave word –of –mouth) praise of products. These were what are now modern announcers who advertise on radio and television commercials. After the invention of the printing press by the German printer Johannes Gutenberg around 1450 printed advertisement came into being. This helped in the distribution of posters and circulars. Around the 17th century the first newspaper advertisement was published. The advertisement was on the theft of 12 horses and a reward for the return of them. In the American Colonies, the Boston News-Letter was the first newspaper that regularly published advertisements. This was around the 18th century. Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea of using bold headlines for advertisements to make them eye-catching.

Advertisement is becoming an industry in itself. Media depend heavily on advertisements for the airing of their shows. Manufacturers invest huge amounts of money for the advertisements of their products. In the U.S.A. more than $308 billion was spent on advertising alone in the year 1999. So, advertising is a part of marketing that cannot be ignored. Rather more emphasis and creativity on advertisements are needed to launch, sell and keep products in the market place.

Advertising agencies that use creative talent and specialize in the latest technology for the advertisement of goods are found in plentiful all across countries. The main advertising agencies around the world are American Association of Advertising Agencies(AAAA), Grey Global Group and Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide.
